On the island of Capri , there is a famous cave . The entrance is only one meter high and two meters wide . So visitors must lie flat in a small boat . The boat slips slowly through the low hole . Inside , the world changes . The water glows with a strong blue light . People call the cave the Grotta Azzurra , the Blue Cave . The color is a bright , clear blue . Why is the water so blue ? There is a second , bigger hole under the water . Most of the sunlight enters through this deep hole . The water stops the red light , but the blue light passes . The Roman emperor Tiberius lived on Capri . He ruled the empire from the island , from 27 to 37 AD . He used the cave as a private bath for his villa . In August 1826 , a German poet called August Kopisch visited the cave . A local fisherman , Angelo Ferraro , showed him the way . Kopisch wrote about the blue water , and soon the cave was famous . In 1964 , divers discovered Roman statues of sea gods on the cave floor . The statues waited there for almost two thousand years . Today , visitors still lie flat in the boat . They pass through the hole , and the water glows blue .
