You start your day at the port of Cagliari . Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia . Sardinia is a big island in Italy . From the port , the city climbs a hill . The old quarter is on the hill . Walls go around most of it . People started the walls in the 1200s . You still go in through old gates . Walk up the narrow streets and stairs . Soon you see a tall stone tower . This is the Elephant Tower . It is more than thirty metres tall . A small marble elephant stands on the front . Then go to a wide white terrace on the hill . From here , you see the port and the sea . Far away , you see a long beach , too . It is about eight kilometres long . The sand is white and soft , and the water is clear . Take a city bus from the centre . Near the beach , there is a big lagoon with salt water . People took salt from it until 1985 . Today it is a park , and you can go in for free . Hundreds of pink flamingos stand in the shallow water . In one day , you go from a stone elephant to pink birds .
