From far away , the mountains above Carrara look white , as if snow never melts . The whole mountain is marble . Carrara is a town in Tuscany , in Italy . People have cut marble from these mountains for more than two thousand years . Today , workers called cavatori still climb up to the quarries every morning . The marble here is very white and very pure . That is why it is famous . Five hundred years ago , the artist Michelangelo came to Carrara himself . He chose the blocks for his statues with his own hands . His famous statue , the David , is made of Carrara marble . Cutting the stone is hard and dangerous work . Huge blocks , heavy as houses , come down the mountain . The cavatori know each block well . Michelangelo said something strange about marble . He said the statue is already inside the stone . The artist only has to take away what is extra and set it free . So the white mountain is not empty . It is full of shapes that no one has found yet .
