It is white , and it comes from Madagascar . Behind the flower there is a long tube . The tube is about thirty centimetres long . That is longer than a hand . In 1862 an English man who grew orchids , James Bateman , sent the flower to Charles Darwin . Darwin measured the tube . The sweet drink , called nectar , was only at the very end . Darwin asked which insect could drink from it . He wrote that a moth with a very long tongue must live in Madagascar . Its tongue must be as long as the tube . Nobody had seen such a moth . In 1867 another scientist , Wallace , said the same thing . He even put a drawing of the moth in his article . Then , in 1903 , scientists named a real moth from Madagascar . Its tongue is very long , up to about twenty - eight centimetres . Its name means " predicted . " In 1992 a German scientist , Lutz Wasserthal , saw the moth at the flower and took photos . Flowers and insects shape each other over a very long time . A long tube and a long tongue fit together like a key and a lock . Next time you see a flower , ask : who comes to drink here ?
