Every
morning
,
millions
of
small
children
go
to
kindergarten
.
They
play
with
blocks
and
sing
songs
.
Kindergarten
is
a
German
word
,
but
English
uses
it
too
.
It
means
"
a
garden
of
children
"
.
The
word
comes
from
a
teacher
,
Friedrich
Fröbel
.
In
1837
,
he
opened
a
school
for
very
small
children
.
It
was
in
Bad
Blankenburg
,
a
small
town
in
Germany
.
In
1840
,
he
named
it
Kindergarten
.
Why
a
garden
?
For
Fröbel
,
children
were
like
little
plants
.
A
good
gardener
gives
a
plant
water
,
sun
and
time
.
A
good
teacher
does
the
same
with
children
.
In
his
school
,
children
played
and
learned
.
Fröbel
made
soft
balls
and
wooden
blocks
for
them
.
He
called
these
toys
"
gifts
"
.
With
the
blocks
,
children
made
houses
,
towers
and
shapes
.
In
1851
,
Prussia
did
not
like
his
ideas
and
closed
its
kindergartens
.
But
his
students
took
the
idea
to
other
countries
.
One
of
them
was
Margarethe
Schurz
.
In
1856
,
she
opened
a
kindergarten
in
Watertown
,
in
the
United
States
.
English
kept
the
German
word
.
Many
other
languages
translated
it
,
but
they
kept
the
garden
.
So
every
morning
,
children
still
go
to
a
garden
.
It
has
no
flowers
,
but
the
children
grow
.
