Walk
into
Piazza
dei
Signori
in
Padua
.
Look
up
at
the
tall
tower
.
A
big
blue
clock
face
shines
above
an
old
stone
arch
.
It
shows
the
time
,
and
it
also
shows
the
sky
.
This
is
an
astronomical
clock
.
It
follows
the
sun
and
the
moon
.
It
has
the
gold
signs
of
the
zodiac
.
The
face
has
twenty
-
four
hours
,
not
twelve
.
Jacopo
Dondi
,
a
doctor
and
astronomer
,
made
the
first
clock
in
1344
.
In
1390
there
was
a
war
,
and
soldiers
destroyed
it
.
Later
,
clockmakers
made
a
new
clock
on
the
old
model
.
The
city
opened
it
in
1437
,
and
it
still
works
today
.
Now
count
the
signs
on
the
face
.
There
are
only
eleven
,
and
Libra
,
the
scales
,
is
missing
.
In
one
story
,
the
clockmaker
was
angry
about
his
pay
.
So
he
left
out
the
scales
.
But
this
story
is
only
a
legend
.
The
real
reason
is
older
.
For
early
Greek
astronomers
,
the
scales
and
the
scorpion
were
one
sign
.
So
the
scorpion
has
two
places
on
the
face
.
Look
up
one
more
time
at
the
blue
face
.
The
clock
tells
the
time
,
and
it
tells
the
stars
.
Only
the
scales
are
missing
.
