High in the Dolomites , in north Italy , there is a seashell in the rock . It is a seashell in the hard stone . You can touch it with your finger . But the sea is three thousand meters below . This seashell is a fossil . It lived in a warm tropical sea about 250 million years ago . In that time , the sea covered this land . Corals made big reefs in the shallow water . Very slowly , the land moved up . The old coral reefs turned into high mountains . Each pale mountain here is now tall and dry . So each pale mountain here is an old sea floor . In 1791 , a French scientist , Déodat de Dolomieu , studied this pale rock . Now people call the rock dolomite , after him . One big peak here is the Marmolada . In 2009 , UNESCO added the Dolomites to its World Heritage list . Many people climb and walk here every summer . They find shells and corals in the rock , high above the clouds . In the evening , the sun goes down . The pale rock turns pink . Local people call this light enrosadira . The old seashell sits in the pink rock and waits for the morning .
