Today , almost everyone in Italy speaks Italian . When Italy became one country in 1861 , the people did not share one language . In each region , they spoke their own way . A person from Naples and a person from Venice often could not understand each other . The " standard " Italian , based on the city of Florence , was something most people only read in books . The first Italian channel , RAI , began in 1954 . At that time , few families had a TV . So people met in the village bar or the square to watch together . Every night , they heard the same Italian , spoken clearly by people on the screen . There was even a TV school . A teacher named Alberto Manzi taught reading and writing on television . Many adults in Italy could not read . His program was called " It is never too late . " Slowly , the country learned . Children copied the words from the screen . Grandparents learned new ones . The television did what schools alone could not do so fast : it taught a whole nation to speak one shared language .
