Stand at the edge of the Namib Desert in Namibia . Behind you are tall orange sand dunes . In front of you is the cold Atlantic Ocean . This is one of the strangest places on Earth . Scientists say it is at least 55 million years old . That makes it the oldest desert in the world . The Sahara is much younger . The desert is dry because of the ocean . Cold water comes up from the deep sea near the coast . Cool air does not carry much rain . Some parts get less than 15 millimetres of rain each year . But the cold ocean also brings fog . Every morning , thick fog rolls in from the sea . Some animals and plants get their water from this fog . The fog basking beetle tilts its body to collect fog drops . It drinks the drops that run down its back . Bigger animals live here too . Desert - adapted lions walk on the beach and eat seals . Elephants dig in dry riverbeds to find water underground . The Namib shows us something important . Life does not need rain to survive . It needs time and a good idea .
