forest

not
see
it
.
It
sits
under
the
water
and
mud
of
the
lagoon

It
is
very
old
.
It
has
been
there
since
the
early
medieval
period
.
The
trees
are
alder
.
Builders
cut
millions
of
them
.
They
made
them
into
piles
.
A
pile
is
a
long
,
strong
pole
of
wood
.
Builders
drove
the
piles
deep
into
the
lagoon
floor
.
As
the
city
grew
,
they
drove
more
.
Every
new
building
needed
its
own
rows
of
piles
.
Alder
has
a
special
quality
.
It
does
not
rot
when
it
stays
wet
.
It
also
needs
no
air
to
stay
strong
.
These
two
things
make
it
perfect
for
this
job
.
The
mud
around
the
piles
keeps
all
air
out
.
Without
air
,
the
wood
does
not
decay
.
Over
centuries
,
the
wood
slowly
turns
hard
.
It
becomes
almost
like
stone
.
It
is
no
longer
quite
wood
.
But
it
still
holds
its
shape
and
its
strength
.
The
city
of
Venice
sits
on
top
of
these
piles
.
The
piles
do
not
move
.
They
do
not
rot
.
They
hold
the
weight
of
the
whole
city
.
That
is
why
Venice
is
still
standing
today
.
