" My father could answer that better than I can , " he says . The gulls call somewhere in the haze . He hits the machine once , twice . He comes back carrying two cups — two this time . He puts one on the bench beside her and holds the other himself . They sit together with the cups , not quite with the conversation . The silence between them has changed since last Friday . It is the first time it has been easy . Anna asks about the boatyard . Leo asks about the school . The sea moves slowly under the haze , and forty minutes of water pass around them . The dock comes into view . She begins : " I — " The horn sounds at six .
