Look at the lines on a piece of sheet music . Six notes sit on those lines . Each note has a name : Do , Re , Mi , Fa , Sol , La. A monk named Guido of Arezzo gave them those names . Guido lived in a monastery in Italy . Teaching monks to sing was very hard . They had to learn every song from memory . Guido wanted to make it easier . He took the first words of a Latin hymn to Saint John . Each line started on a higher note than the line before . He used those first words as the names of the notes . Ut , Re , Mi , Fa , Sol , La — six steps up the scale . He also drew lines on paper . He put notes on and between the lines . This was the first staff . A monk could now read a song he had never heard before . Before Guido , learning one new song took months . With his system , it took days . Other musicians across Europe adopted his idea . The names changed a little over time . " Si " was added later for the seventh note . Every musician today uses what Guido built . His lines and his names still carry every song in the world .
