1854
,
many
people
in
London
got
very
sick
.
They
lived
in
a
place
called
Soho
.
The
illness
was
cholera
.
More
than
five
hundred
people
died
in
ten
days

doctor
lived
nearby

His
name
was
John
Snow
.
He
wanted
to
find
the
cause
of
the
illness
.
Snow
walked
the
streets
and
asked
questions
.
He
made
a
list
of
the
people
who
died
.
Most
of
them
drank
water
from
one
pump
.
The
pump
was
on
Broad
Street
.
On
7
September
,
Snow
spoke
to
the
local
leaders
.
The
next
day
,
workers
took
the
handle
off
the
pump
.
Nobody
could
take
water
from
it
now
.
The
illness
was
already
slowing
,
and
soon
it
ended
.
Later
,
Snow
drew
a
map
of
Soho
.
He
put
a
mark
on
the
map
for
every
death
.
The
marks
were
close
together
around
the
Broad
Street
pump
.
Not
everyone
believed
Snow
at
first
.
Many
people
thought
bad
air
made
people
sick
.
Snow
's
map
pointed
to
dirty
water
.
Today
,
doctors
still
use
maps
to
find
the
cause
of
an
illness
.
They
look
for
a
pattern
in
the
cases
.
Snow
's
map
is
one
of
the
most
famous
