Daniel reached Hut Four after dark , later than usual , with a kind of hurry in him . He sat at the register table and opened the register . He read the blank page as if something might appear if he looked long enough . He asked the keeper if a woman had passed through today . He thought about the wrong fork above Hut Three , and how a person could go the wrong way and no one would know for a full day . Pau arrived with the bread before midnight . Outside , Cebolla stood in the dark , ears flat , not going anywhere , because it was before sunrise and she was an intelligent animal . Daniel did not write that night . He sat with the open register , the empty page , and the lamp turned low . In the morning , Pau came through from above . Under the loaf was a folded page from Elsa . Elsa wrote : I stayed at the spring above the hut . The water is cold enough to make you honest . I will be at Hut Five tomorrow . Then he found his pencil . Daniel wrote : I am one day behind , which I will explain . I had a cheese omelette with bread , tomato , and a whole pot of coffee . It was an enormous breakfast . I stand behind this decision .
