Swim
in
the
sea
for
a
few
minutes
.
Then
touch
your
lips
with
your
tongue
.
They
taste
of
salt
.
Where
does
this
salt
come
from
?
The
answer
starts
on
land
,
with
rain
.
Rain
is
a
little
acidic
.
It
falls
on
rocks
and
slowly
breaks
them
.
Very
small
pieces
of
rock
,
the
minerals
,
go
into
the
water
.
Rivers
carry
this
water
to
the
sea
for
millions
of
years
.
River
water
tastes
fresh
,
but
it
carries
some
salt
.
Two
minerals
arrive
most
often
:
sodium
and
chloride
.
Together
,
they
make
the
salt
on
our
table
.
Some
salt
also
comes
from
under
the
sea
.
Very
hot
water
comes
out
of
deep
cracks
in
the
sea
floor
.
It
is
hotter
than
boiling
water
.
It
carries
minerals
from
the
rocks
.
Then
the
sun
does
its
work
.
It
heats
the
sea
,
and
the
water
goes
up
into
the
air
.
But
the
salt
stays
in
the
sea
.
One
litre
of
sea
water
has
about
35
grams
of
salt
.
That
is
3.5
percent
,
and
some
seas
have
much
more
.
The
Dead
Sea
has
almost
ten
times
more
salt
.
People
float
on
it
easily
.
So
the
salt
on
your
lips
was
once
a
rock
.
