The white rock shines above Athens , high above the streets , and the Parthenon waits at the top . It is a temple to the goddess Athena , built in the 5th century BC under Pericles . You enter through a large marble gateway at the west end of the rock . Then you can find the small Temple of Athena Nike , and the Erechtheion , where a porch rests on statues of women . The best months to visit are April , May , September and October . In central Athens , April , May and October are warm but not hot . September is still warm , but it cools toward autumn . July and August are the hottest months , often well over 30 degrees at midday . Summer is also very dry and sunny . The time of day matters too , but be careful with one idea . Going early beats the midday sun , but it does not beat the crowds . Organised tours and cruise passengers make up about half of all visitors , and they stay about 45 minutes . Half of the daily visitors arrive in the morning , and large groups mostly come before noon . If you want more space , try the late afternoon , when the groups have mostly left . On a very hot day , the site can close at midday , so keep your plan flexible . There is also a lift for visitors who can not climb the hill . It can stop in strong wind , heavy rain or very great heat . Choose a mild month and a quieter hour , and the white rock above Athens is a pleasure to climb .
