On 5 August 2010 , rock fell inside a mine in Chile . The mine is San José , in the Atacama Desert . Thirty - three miners were deep under the ground . For seventeen days , nobody heard from the men . Teams drilled small holes into the rock . On 22 August , a drill came up with a note . The note said : " We are fine in the shelter , the 33 . " The men were about 700 metres down . The teams needed a bigger hole . The new hole went down about 620 metres . It was about 70 centimetres wide . Engineers built a thin capsule for it . It was only 54 centimetres wide . One man could stand inside it . It had extra air and a small camera . On the night of 12 October , the rescue started . First , rescuers went down to the men . Then one miner got in the capsule . Each trip took about fifteen minutes . Just after midnight , the first miner came out . The capsule went up and down again and again . On 13 October , the last miner came out . The men were underground for 69 days . A small note told the world they were alive . A thin capsule brought all 33 men up .
