The night bakery is open , the only light awake on the street . Over the door hangs the sign , " OPEN WHEN THE CITY SLEEPS , " and Pamuk the cat sleeps on the warm flour bin while Mert waits at the counter , flour on his hands . The bell over the door rings . Just after midnight , Sevim knocks in her blue headscarf and asks for " yesterday 's bread " ; Mert gives her today 's and takes yesterday 's price , and she goes home . The bell rings again , and a woman comes in who does not say a word . Her eyes are red , and it is plain , without anyone saying it , that she is newly alone . On the bin , Pamuk lifts her head , and so Mert knows the night is hers . He asks her nothing at all . He simply wraps bread for two — though she came in alone — and he does not explain why , because some kindnesses are spoiled by being spoken . The woman looks at the bread for two . In the end she only nods , and that is enough . When she has gone , a single old coin sits on the windowsill . Mert drops it into the tin without a word . Then he turns the radio down low and says , " Goodnight , " to the empty street .
