The night bakery is open , as it is every night , no matter the weather . Over the door hangs the sign , " OPEN WHEN THE CITY SLEEPS , " and Pamuk the cat sleeps on the warm bin while Mert waits with flour on his hands . Tonight , though , the city is afraid . Word has gone round that a great storm is coming , and so the street lies empty and the bell does not ring even once . In the end no storm arrives at all ; it was only a rumor , which is the worst weather this street ever truly sees . Just after midnight , as always , Sevim knocks . She is in her blue headscarf , and she is perfectly dry , because of course there is no rain . " Yesterday 's bread , " she says , and Mert gives her today 's and takes yesterday 's price . But on the warm bin Pamuk does not lift her head , for tonight there is no troubled stranger at the door — there is only Sevim , and Mert finds himself watching her for a long moment , as if reading a page he has not turned before . When she has gone , Mert looks to the windowsill , and the coin is not there . He looks again , and still there is nothing . He is afraid , just a little , and he could not tell you why . All the same , he keeps the door open . Then he turns the radio down low and says , " Goodnight , " to the empty street .
