Venice is a city on the water . It has canals , boats , and old palaces . But its best secret is under the water . Venice stands on a forest . The city sits in a lagoon . The ground of the lagoon is soft mud . Heavy stone houses can not stand on soft mud . So the first Venetians used trees . More than one thousand years ago , workers pushed long wooden poles into the mud . They pushed the poles down , one next to the other , in long rows . Then they built their houses on top of the poles . Under the mud , there is no air . Without air , wood does not rot . Over the years , the poles became hard , almost like stone . One famous church , Santa Maria della Salute , stands on more than one million poles . Workers started to push them into the mud in 1631 . The church still stands on them today . So remember this on a walk in Venice . The beautiful palaces rest on an old , dark forest . Under every street and every canal , the trees still hold the city . This forest is very quiet and very strong .
