The old town of Bamberg , in the south of Germany , has an island quarter , and the river Regnitz runs along its edge . On its bank stands a long row of small half - timbered houses , packed close together . Their street is called Fischerei , and the houses carry the numbers 11 to 47 . Look closely and you see why the people of Bamberg call this corner Little Venice . The houses stand directly on the water , with wooden balconies above it . In front of many of them there is a tiny garden , and small boats are tied up beside the gardens . This was the home of Bamberg 's fishermen and boatmen . Parts of this group of houses go back to the late Middle Ages . At first , the cellars of these houses were open halls facing the river . Later , wooden galleries replaced them , and the fishermen hung their nets there to dry . The best view is from the opposite bank . Cross the river and follow the Leinritt , a riverside path that is also suitable for wheelchairs . From there , the whole line of houses , gardens and boats lies in front of you . If you prefer the water , a river cruise takes you directly past the row . The river still plays a part in local life . During the Sandkerwa , a big local festival , crowds watch the fishermen 's jousting on the Regnitz , with Little Venice behind it . Little Venice is only one piece of a larger picture . A short walk away , the Old Town Hall stands in the middle of the river , and two bridges reach it . The first record of it is from the 1380s ; the building you see today is from the 1400s , with changes in the 1700s . In 1993 , Bamberg 's old town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List . Come back to the Leinritt at the end of your visit . In the evening the gardens go quiet , the boats rock gently , and the fishermen 's houses stand on the water as they have for centuries .
