Bonngasse is a narrow street in the centre of Bonn , at the edge of the pedestrian zone . At number 20 stands one of the few houses in the city that survive from the 1700s . Builders put it up around 1700 , on top of an older cellar . In December 1770 , Ludwig van Beethoven was born here . His parents had moved into the garden wing in November 1767 , and the bedrooms were in the attic . Beethoven was probably born in one of the small rooms under the roof . The exact day is not documented . What survives is the record of his baptism , on 17 December 1770 , in the parish of St. Remigius . The house did not stay a family home for ever . In 1889 , twelve citizens of Bonn founded an association to protect it , and in 1893 the museum opened . Today it holds objects from different parts of his life . As a boy , from the age of ten , he played the organ at the Minorite church , which is now St. Remigius . The console of that organ is on show . At eighteen , he joined the court orchestra as a viola player . His viola is here too , and it is still played on special occasions . The later objects are harder to look at . In 1813 , Johann Nepomuk Mälzel made several ear trumpets for Beethoven , who was losing his hearing . The museum also keeps his last piano , built by Conrad Graf of Vienna , which Beethoven had at his disposal from January 1826 . Together , the objects show one life from both ends : a boy who played an organ in Bonn , and a man who needed ear trumpets . At the end of your visit , step into the garden , where a collection of Beethoven busts , begun in the early 1900s , is waiting .
