Bilbao lies on both banks of the Nervión estuary in the north of Spain , but it began on the right bank . Walk along the water to reach the oldest part of the city , the Casco Viejo . People also call it the Seven Streets . On 15 June 1300 , Diego López de Haro , the Lord of Biscay , gave Bilbao a charter that made it a town . The first three streets were Somera , Artekale and Tendería , and they ran side by side down the slope . In the 1400s , four more streets were added : Belostikale , Carnicería Vieja , Barrenkale and Barrenkale Barrena . Narrow alleys , called cantons , still link the seven streets to each other . Each street has kept its name , and some names remember old trades . Carnicería Vieja means the old butcher 's , because the city 's first slaughterhouse stood there . For centuries a wall protected the town , but most of it came down long ago . Behind the altar of the Church of San Antón , you can still see a piece of it . Outside the old wall ran Ronda , the patrol street , which some people call the eighth street . The quarter was declared a historic and artistic site in 1972 , and its streets became pedestrian in 1979 . In 1983 , a flood damaged the area , and it had to be restored . Today the seven streets are lined with small shops and traditional bars . In the bars , people eat small snacks with a small glass of wine . At the southern end , near the river , the Ribera Market sells food . In the quarter , the Gothic cathedral is a stop for pilgrims on the way to Santiago . When you leave , walk back down Artekale or Somera to the river . The seven streets behind you are more than five hundred years old .
