Peschiera del Garda is an old fortress town at the southern end of Lake Garda . Here the lake empties into a single green river , the Mincio . A paved cycle path follows its banks south to Mantua , and it never climbs anything you could call a hill . Depending on where you start and finish , the ride measures between 43 and 46 kilometres . The path was completed in 2006 and runs mostly beside the river , away from traffic . It suits families and relaxed riders . Spring and early autumn are the best seasons , when the fields are green and the air is mild . The first highlight comes after about eleven kilometres at Borghetto , a tiny village of stone houses and water mills . Across the valley runs the Visconti bridge , a fortified dam about 650 metres long . The Duke of Milan began it in 1393 . He hoped to steal the river that protected Mantua , but the plan was never completed . On the hill above Borghetto , Valeggio sul Mincio keeps a castle once held by the Scaliger family of Verona . Its restaurants make it a good stop for lunch . Further south , the path crosses quiet farmland and reed beds in the Mincio regional park . Herons often fish in the shallows here . Near the city , the river widens into three lakes , the Upper , Middle and Lower Lakes , which wrap around Mantua . They are not natural : the engineer Alberto Pitentino shaped them in 1190 to defend the city and control floods . The path ends beside the Middle Lake , with the domes and towers of the Ducal Palace rising across the water . To return , take a regional train from Mantua and change in Verona for Peschiera . By evening you are back where the green river leaves the lake , the place where your ride began .
